MOTS-C (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA-c) is a recently discovered mitochondrial-derived peptide that has generated significant excitement in both exercise science and aging research.
MOTS-C was identified in 2015 by researchers at the University of Southern California. Unlike most peptides encoded by nuclear DNA, MOTS-C is encoded by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), making it part of a novel class of signaling molecules called mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs).
MOTS-C appears to work through several pathways: - AMPK activation — Mimics some effects of exercise on cellular energy sensing - Folate-methionine cycle regulation — Affects one-carbon metabolism - Nuclear translocation — Can travel from mitochondria to the nucleus to regulate gene expression - Metabolic regulation — Influences glucose and fat metabolism
MOTS-C represents a fundamentally new type of biological signaling — communication from mitochondria to the nucleus via peptide messengers. This discovery has opened entirely new avenues for understanding aging, metabolism, and exercise biology.
