Peptide purity is perhaps the single most important factor in research quality. The difference between 95% and 99%+ purity may seem small numerically, but its impact on research outcomes can be substantial.
What Does Purity Mean?
Peptide purity refers to the percentage of the desired peptide relative to total material in the sample. A 99% pure peptide contains 99% target compound and 1% impurities.
Types of Impurities
Deletion Sequences
During solid-phase peptide synthesis, incomplete coupling reactions can produce peptides missing one or more amino acids. These "deletion peptides" are the most common impurity.
Oxidized Forms
Certain amino acids (methionine, cysteine, tryptophan) are susceptible to oxidation, creating modified versions of the target peptide.
Residual Solvents
Trace amounts of solvents used during synthesis and purification may remain in the final product.
Why Purity Matters
Research Reproducibility
Impurities can cause variable results between experiments. If your "peptide" is actually 5% impurities, different batches may have different impurity profiles, leading to inconsistent data.
Activity Interference
Deletion sequences and truncated peptides may have partial activity at the target receptor, confounding dose-response relationships.
Toxicity Concerns
In cell culture and animal studies, impurities can introduce unexpected toxicity or off-target effects.
How to Verify Purity
HPLC Analysis
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography is the standard method. Look for:
- Sharp, well-resolved main peak
- Minimal secondary peaks
- Purity calculation of 99%+
Mass Spectrometry
Confirms molecular identity. The observed molecular weight should match the theoretical weight.
Always Request COAs
Never use research peptides without reviewing a current Certificate of Analysis. At Platinum Biolabs, every product ships with full HPLC and MS documentation.
